Webroot SpySweeper is really doing their homework. My suto update has me up to 3.5 which has nearly 69,000 definitions installed.

I stopped using IE in favor of Firefox so I had to stop using the Yahoo tool bar with Anti-spy, but trying other packages in concert with Spy Sweep so far Spy Sweeper has found more and been more thorough than any of the other anti-Spy products.

I am trying CA Pest Patrol on another system and will compare the two programs and update again. My experience with CA EZ Armor has been very positive so if Pest Patrol is along the same lines as EZ-AV and EZ-FW I expect to be impressed, but for my money Webroot has the best and most thorough product.

I use this in combination with Ad Aware. Spy Sweeper finds items that Ad Aware misses and vice versa. The first time I installed the package I ran it and the system found several questionable items. I ran Ad Aware right afterwards and it found 3 more.

A few weeks later I did the reverse on my daughters computer. Ad Aware pronounced the syetem clean while Spy Sweeper found a keystroke logger.

I suppose no one package will do it all. Last week I ran Spy Sweeper and Ad Aware. Both said I was clean. The I installed Yahoo Anti-Spy and it found two items one was another key logger!

Webroot does have great tech support, and they keep the software automatically updated for you. It does a good job, but there is no single package that will find all the spyware out there. I recommend using this in concert with Ad Aware or Yahoo Anti-Spy.

Installation was trivial on my two-year old XP system and Spy Sweeper didn't conflict with other programs running, including Norton Anti-Virus 2003. It's possible to micromanage which features you want to turn on/off. If you insist on using Internet Explorer, this product is critical, although I prefer Firefox for my browser which does a better job with pop-up ads and such.

Even with Firefox, however, Spy Sweeper found spyware and cookies that Ad-Aware missed. On a full sweep, it takes something around 10 minutes to sweep your disk, so while it's not super-fast, it's not super-slow either and for the most part, you will be running this product when you aren't using your computer.

The license is good for a year's worth of updates and assuming Webroot continues to keep up with what's out there, this is a piece of software that will give you peace of mind for a very cheap price. Highly recommended.

This is great! The free trial version on download.com had saved my computer (the only program that got rid off some spyware that was in my start-up and causing lots of problems). And I've also used the trial version on several of my friends' computers. It hasn't picked up much, though, since I bought it. But that's probably because now I have a new hard drive and a firewall. Before, I bought the computer used and didn't know what a firewall was. I should have saved the disk and installed it when I started having problems. But oh well, it's doing it's job and if I start having problems once the CD expires, then I will probably buy a new disk. That's how good it is!

No matter where you are with your PC, whether its brand new or a few years old get this if your using the internet.I had been previously dealing with spyware, viruses and other nasty stuff until I got Spysweeper. I used Mcaffe, Adaware, Spy Bot and a couple others. None of them could clean my system or find the root problem.I would still have a Utillities program to use and maybe another Antivirus program but for the hardcore stuff Spysweeper is the best. While we take various precautions to protect our homes and cars from unauthorised access, the same can not always be said about our computer systems. It is no longer enough to rely on installing anti-virus software and thinking the job was done. Other types of threats exist and these need their own form of protection. One example is the category known as Spyware and this includes items such as Trojans, keyloggers, adware, system monitors and cookies.

The purpose of Adware is to gather information that could prove useful to and financially benefit third parties. Malware can infiltrate your system during online activity or concealed within other items of software. Once in residence on your system, Badware sets out to gather information that could include sensitive personal data or tracking details of any activity that could indicate preferences in various situations. Offering to help deal with this particular, insidious infiltration of your computer system is Webroot's Spy Sweeper.

Now up to version 5, Spy Sweeper requires the entry of a 20-character serial number as part of its standard installation. The various shields available with Spy Sweeper 5 have been categorised as Internet Explorer, Windows System, Host Files and Startup Programs. These shields cover a range of specific areas that will be protected such as Cookies, Favourites, Memory and a new Keylogger feature.

Although Spy Sweeper monitors any ongoing activity for attempted Spyware intrusion, it is advisable to run an initial full sweep of your system. This can be time consuming but as this is not something you need to do frequently, it is not too much of a hardship especially with this latest version. It was noticeable that version 5 was far quicker to perform a sweep than its predecessor. Whereas version 4.5 took nearly 78 minutes to check a system with 16.9GB of data against its 144,685 fingerprints, version 5 reduced this time to just 16 minutes 25 seconds - a sizeable reduction in anybody's book.

The increase in scanning speed is not the only enhanced feature found in this latest version of Spy Sweeper. Webroot's Phileas technology, which has been designed to proactively seek out Spyware and malware, has been enhanced to make it more effective in its searching capabilities. Spy Sweeper 5 has new blocking abilities; an enhanced rootkit discovery feature; plus the capability to scan all files attempting to download to your system.

I have used Spy Sweeper as my protection tool against Spyware since version 2 and will continue to do so. The product is easy to use in that you can set it up and almost forget about it as it carries out its designated task. Updates are carried out seamlessly and, apart from messages asking for permission whether to implement changes or not, intrusion is kept to a minimum.

Webroot SpySweeper download software application installs in much the same way as any Windows executable, but there is one important thing to keep in mind with it, or indeed any spyware software, and that's making sure that you've got the latest version and the latest spyware definitions. The version of Webroot SpySweeper software application provided to us was the boxed CD version, although it's also available for download. If you do go the boxed copy route (AU$59.95) you'll need to hit the download route regardless, as it's highly likely the version you get will be behind the times, at least in terms of spyware definitions, if not version numbers. Thankfully, after a little initial confusion we were able to update to the latest version and latest definitions.

Features

By default, Webroot SpySweeper software application installs itself to run on Windows startup, providing defences against common Windows hijacks and spyware installs, in much the same way that many anti-virus packages do. The main application can then be launched from the system tray or a menu selection. The main application screen is relatively straightforward, with the main option to sweep for spyware at the very top, followed by options to view previous test results and the applications and settings that have been "quarantined" in previous sweeps. While it's not what you could call an aesthetically pleasing application, it certainly gets the job done from an interface perspective.

Performance

We tested Webroot SpySweeper software application on a two different systems; one that had no previous spyware removal tools running on it, and one that had been cleaned by an updated version of SpyBot Search & Destroy.

Both tests ran essentially identically. Interestingly - or potentially worryingly - the theoretically "clean" SpyBot system - which had previously been used for testing a variety of P2P applications - still had some spyware traces on it that SpyBot had failed to detect. The clean system had a few cookies detected, but beyond that came back with a clean bill of health.

Once you've identified a spyware threat, Webroot SpySweeper download software application gives you a small information dialog box that should help you work out whether it's something that should be removed, or simply left alone. Detected items are thrown into a quarantine zone, allowing you to check whether any applications that required them have suddenly stopped working. From the quarantine zone it's simple enough to eradicate threats entirely.

Webroot SpySweeper software application is quite thorough, but it's also quite slow, and on both tested machines we noticed a solid performance hit while sweeping for Spyware. It's acceptable if all you need to do is a little light e-mail checking, or simple Web surfing, but if you've got more taxing tasks in mind, you'll need to set aside separate times to periodically check for Spyware.

Ultimately, Webroot SpySweeper software application is a good choice if you're concerned about spyware on your PC, especially if you run a lot of ad-supported software, or programs you're not too sure about. If you've got solid confidence in what's running on your PC, you could get by with free utilities such as SpyBot, however.

Spy Sweeper is a good spyware detection and removal program that impressed us during testing. It has a large variety of protection techniques combined with good scanning and removing capabilities makes buying Spy Sweeper one of the better choices you can make. Unfortunately, small, but annoying, problems with its interface lowers the overall program rating.

Interface

While the general set up behind Spy Sweeper's interface is acceptable, a few problems such as the inability to change the window size that the program runs in or the fact that the program is littered with annoying pop-up alerts that appear constantly can make you feel uncomfortable at best (or furious at worst) while using the program.

Leaving those problems aside, the interface is easy to master and does not cause any significant problems unless you run your desktop at high resolutions where the messages cease to be legible.

Main features

Spysweeper is one of most densely packed anti-spyware tools. It is surprising how such a small program can include so many functions. It is capable of such things as:

*Protecting your PC in real-time using a large set of various shields working against most known adware and security threats.

*Scanning the Windows registry and processes,

*Scanning all files and folders on all local drives,

*Quarantining infected/malicious files in case you need them in future,

*Scheduling scans,

* and it has a complex immunization system.

Performance

Spysweeper is certainly an excellent spyware detector and remover, with excellent detection/removal accuracy. Even its immunization/real-time protection features work just fine, effectively stopping most intrusions before they even begin. However, it seems that SpySweeper is unable to remove several popular threats including CoolWebSearch. This lowers its usability a little, especially considering the fact that the free CWShredder, which was able to take care of this particular baddie, is not going to be updated anymore.

The scanning engine used in Webroot Spysweeper is relatively fast, assuming your computer isn't knee-deep in infections. Otherwise, the average file scan can take up to an hour or even more depending on how busy it is.

Pros & cons:

- Spy Sweeper is unable to remove some common threats.

The bottom line: Webroot SpySweeper download if you need high quality, real-time protection combined with good scanning/removal capabilities. However, make sure you also have some other spyware scanner available to get rid of those threats Spy Sweeper can't cope with. And unfortunately, this is pretty much the advice you'll get no matter which one you go with. There really isn't a single program that is the be all and end all of spyware removal. Most people have two or even three programs installed to take care of all known threats since the world of spyware is constantly evolving and changing. A one-year subscription to Spysweeper, which is available in a boxed version or as a SpySweeper download, costs $29.95. Installation of the software proceeds typically, requiring that you enter a long license key and register to get program and virus-signature updates from Webroot.

These updates are absolutely necessary to ensure protection against the latest spyware variants. Once installed, Spysweeper puts a new icon - a graphic of a targeting crosshairs - in your system tray, and is locked and loaded.

Webroot Spysweeper is a powerful tool for detecting and removing both adware and spyware programs. With all of the attention that's being paid to adware and spyware, in my opinion it's wise to have a program that is specifically designed to deal with it. And Spysweeper seems like an excellent answer. In testing it out I'm finding the program to be quite fast. That's a real benefit when you have lots of files on your system that need scanning. The program utilizes a spyware database that's kept current so you can avoid even the latest spyware. The program is very easy-to-use and has a nice, intuitive interface.

I've always liked Spysweeper download, ever since it first hit the net. I had a few problems with the early version 3 but since v4.5 it's been fine. I don't run it resident as it's a fair resource hog, well it is if you have all the shields active. It is very good at picking out all the traces and is therefore good at finding remnants of previous infection's, so the comet detection may be legit. I purchased Spysweeper download and was able to take a 40% reduction using the discount code WRKMOM. They have a two-year subscription option ($10 extra for the second year less $4 discount) which makes the final price an excellent deal.
Was surprised at all that Spysweeper picked up that CounterSpy had never even flagged. My CounterSpy subscription was going to expire pretty soon, and I personally like Spysweeper download much better already.
